Home/Blog/Your SMS Sender ID is Showing as Unverified

Businesses across Australia are getting reports right now from customers saying their text messages look suspicious. Some are arriving with a warning label. Some are not arriving at all. If you use a custom sender name instead of a phone number — anything like "CityDental" or "BrightMart" or "AcmeHVAC" — there is a very good chance your messages have been flagged since 1 July 2026.

This is not a glitch. It is the ACMA's new Sender ID Register in effect, and it is actively catching businesses that haven't registered. Here is what is happening, how to tell if you are affected, and exactly what to do about it.

⚠️ This is happening right now

Since 1 July 2026, unregistered sender IDs are being flagged or blocked by Australian telcos. If you have not registered, your messages may already be showing as "Unverified" on your customers' phones.

What Is Happening Right Now

From 1 July 2026, the ACMA made Sender ID registration mandatory for all businesses sending commercial SMS in Australia using an alphanumeric sender name. Telcos and carriers are now checking every outbound message against the official register. If your sender ID is not on the list, one of three things happens:

Which outcome you get depends on the carrier your customer is with. Telstra, Optus, and TPG have all implemented the register checks, and they each handle non-matching sender IDs slightly differently. The common thread: your brand name no longer gets through unchanged unless you are registered.

This is a real problem for businesses that rely on SMS for appointment reminders, promotions, and customer communication. A message that shows as "Unverified" is going to get ignored. Worse, it makes your business look like a scam operation to the very customers you are trying to reach.

Why ACMA Did This

Australia has been dealing with an escalating wave of SMS scams for several years. Fraudsters discovered they could spoof any sender name they liked, so they impersonated the ATO, Centrelink, Commonwealth Bank, and Australia Post to steal credentials and money from millions of Australians.

The Sender ID Register solves this by creating a verified whitelist. Only businesses that have gone through the registration process and proven they are a legitimate entity can use a given sender name. Carriers then cross-check every message at the point of delivery. If the name on the message does not match the approved list, it gets flagged or blocked.

It is the same logic behind the Do Not Call Register, just applied upstream at the sender level rather than the recipient level. The ACMA has broad powers under the Telecommunications Act to mandate this, and the major telcos agreed to enforce it as part of the industry code. For more background on how ACMA regulates SMS, see our full ACMA compliance guide.

The intent is sound. The execution means every legitimate business now has homework to do.

How to Tell If You Are Affected

Not every business sending SMS is affected. If you are sending from a standard Australian mobile number or a shortcode, registration requirements work differently for you. The businesses most immediately impacted are those using an alphanumeric sender ID — that is, a text-based name rather than a number.

To find out if you are affected, do this right now:

If you have already had customers mention that your texts look strange or ask why you are messaging them from an unknown number, that is confirmation your sender ID is not coming through properly.

Quick test: Send a test SMS to a Telstra SIM and an Optus SIM simultaneously. If either shows a warning banner, a different sender name, or a number instead of your brand, you are not registered.

What "Unverified" Actually Looks Like on a Phone

The exact presentation varies by device and carrier, but here is what recipients are seeing.

On Android, particularly with Google Messages, the warning is prominent. The banner appears above the message thread and flags the sender as unverified. Some users report a pop-up asking whether to trust the sender before they can even read the message.

On iOS, the presentation is subtler but still damaging. Messages from unverified senders may land in a separate "Unknown Senders" folder, bypassing the main Messages inbox entirely. If your customer has that filter on, they simply never see your message.

Either way, the trust signal is broken. A dental reminder that looks like a scam is worse than no reminder at all. It trains your customers to ignore you.

How to Register Your Sender ID: Step by Step

Registration goes through the ACMA-backed process administered via your SMS provider or directly with the telcos through the industry body. Here is the general process:

1

Gather your business details

You will need your ABN, registered business name, and the exact sender ID strings you want to use. Each unique sender name needs to be registered separately. If you use "AcmePlumbing" and "AcmeHVAC" as separate sender IDs, both need their own registration.

2

Confirm which sender IDs you actually use

Pull a list from your SMS platform. Sender IDs are case-sensitive in some systems, so "Acme" and "ACME" may be treated differently. Register every variation you use in production sends.

3

Submit your registration

Registration is done through your SMS provider in most cases — they act as the aggregator and submit on behalf of their customers. If you are registering directly, the process goes via the Communications Alliance's sender ID registry portal. You will need to verify your ABN, confirm the sender IDs, and agree to the usage terms.

4

Wait for approval

Approval typically takes between 5 and 15 business days for straightforward registrations. If your sender ID is generic (like "Support" or "Alerts") you may face additional scrutiny or be asked to use a more specific identifier tied to your business name.

5

Confirm your messages are coming through clean

Once approved, send a test message to multiple carriers. You should see your sender name displayed cleanly with no warning banner. Keep a record of your registration confirmation in case you ever need to demonstrate compliance.

You should also review your broader Spam Act obligations while you are at it — registration alone does not cover consent, identification, and unsubscribe requirements.

What MonsterSMS Customers Get

If you are a MonsterSMS customer, you do not have to navigate this process alone. Sender ID registration is handled as part of onboarding. When you set up your account and configure your sender name, we submit the registration on your behalf through our carrier relationships.

You do not need to create an account with the Communications Alliance portal. You do not need to chase approval emails or decode registration forms. We track the status, follow up if there are delays, and notify you when your sender ID is live and verified.

For existing customers who set up their sender ID before July 2026, our team has been proactively working through the registration process. If you have not heard from us yet or you are unsure of your current status, contact support and we will check your registration status immediately.

Our plans include sender ID management as a standard feature — it is not an add-on. We built the platform for the Australian market, which means compliance is baked in, not bolted on.

✅ Sender ID Registration Checklist

☐ Confirm you use an alphanumeric sender ID — check your SMS platform's sender settings right now.
☐ List every sender ID you use — include all variations, including capitalisation differences.
☐ Check if your SMS provider handles registration — many aggregators submit on your behalf.
☐ Submit your ABN and business details — have your registration documents ready.
☐ Allow 5-15 business days for approval — do not assume registration is instant.
☐ Send test messages after approval — verify across Telstra, Optus, and TPG SIMs.
☐ Keep your registration confirmation — you may need to show it if ACMA ever queries your sends.

Do Not Wait on This

Every day you send messages with an unregistered sender ID, you are eroding your customers' trust in your brand. The messages that do get through are arriving with a warning label that says, in plain terms, that you are not a verified sender. For a dental practice, a gym, or a retail business, that association is damaging.

The fix is straightforward if you act now. Registration is a one-time process. Once your sender ID is on the register, your messages deliver cleanly and your brand name does what it is supposed to do: build familiarity and trust with every message you send.

If you are already a MonsterSMS customer, get in touch and we will confirm your registration status today. If you are not yet on MonsterSMS, this is a good time to move to a platform that handles compliance for you from day one.
